36th Chamber @ Avenue, Newbury

Yes yes!

Once again we're here to mangle your mind with bass by the pound and some serious breakbeat pressure! Oh yes sireeee, we've secured a monthly Thursday night in the newly opened Avenue Nightclub in saddlers court, Newbury.  We'll be presenting the finest selection of underground dance music our hand picked DJ's can muster, starting each event with a breakbeat aperitif quickly followed by a side order of dubstep then lashings of drum and bass to finish.

The 36th Chamber working alongside Newbury Dubstepperz and Thump Events means you're guaranteed to hear the baddest local DJ's smacking down the hottest tracks of the moment, however keep your eyes peeled for the odd special guest or two in the future.

Entrance is free as always, however there is a dress code, details are posted here!

A free 19 seater shuttlebus has been organized for the Marketplace in Newbury where those with faulty limbs or extreme laziness disorder can catch a lift down the high street, and also look out for the Avenue team armed with flyers - some of which may be worth free booze to those lucky enough to get one!

A new genetically morphed kind of guestlist is in the process of materializing which will entitle those on it to a free beverage and queue jump, check the facebook group for more details of how to get your name on that...

Drum n Bass mix - Monument 16th August 2009

Here's a little mix I recorded in the Monument this sunday just gone.
I took the opportunity to dig a little deeper in my collection and pulled
out some tunes I used to batter back in the dark old days of the early 00's.

Glade Festival 2009

Glade Festival was a good look once again this year, although the weather was not on our side this time round and I spent the frist couple of days with wet feet as I didn't bother fuckin with wellies, a strategy that I have since re-considered. Anyway saw some wicked DJ's / Acts like DJ Pinch who smashed the enormous Vapor stage on Friday night, The Countryside Alliance, Freestylers, Carl Craig and Limewax on Saturday and a bunch of people on sunday too.

Wicked weekend all round, massive shouts out to all Newbury crew I bumped into as well as the Rinse Out heads from Exeter who made it all happen (Big up Ben Layden!)...

Sweet assed weekend!

Gigs this Weekend!

Got a bunch more Gigs lined up for the lucky people of Newbury this weekend!

The festivities kick off on Friday night at 9pm in the Canal Bar where I'll be supplying a variety of minty fresh beats until midnight. Expect to hear lots of random tunes, the odd eighties smash hit and the Imperial March off the Star Wars soundtrack!

On Saturday I've lined up a little birthday bash in the Bricklayers for my man, DJ Stasha. We're gonna be coming from a slightly different angle for this one, setting up somewhere in the region of 5 decks with the DJ's doing 2 hour sets, so expect things to get ridiculous!
Thump promotions have kindly agreed to provide the breakbeats out in the Smoking Area, so there will be a flavour of music for virtually all tastes going on at some point throughout the evening. The curtain goes up at 8pm with final act finishing at 2am. Gonna be sickness!

And finally on Sunday, the Drum an Bass will be going down as it does every week. For one week only we'll be switching venue's to the Pig and Paper as the Critical State crew have drafted us in a for a rerun of the Bank Holiday mashup they held down there. We'll be back to normal - running it red in the Tap next week....

What a weekend!!

So then, it was a busy weekend for the Newbury based promoters and punters alike with an unprecedented amount of partying going down over the weekend in town. On Saturday night there was no less than three parties going on across the Canal Bar (which was the best ;P ), The Beach party in the Bricklayers and the Hardcore night in the Berkshire Arms.

Let's start with Friday night when I headed over to the Purple Turtle in Reading, with the lads from work. DJ Lokki was up first but I had to go to a birthday party in the evening so I completely missed his set, he said it was cool though so I'm sure it was all good. Me an Magma rocked up in the club at about midnight just when Basement Phil was finishing off his set, he played some wicked old bits mostly from his label Basement Records and I wish I had got their a bit earlier to catch more of it, but being the slave to public transport that I am means this kind of thing is a regular occurrence (i.e. being late and missing good stuff...). Next up was Bongo Odyssey spinning a bit of deeper dnb and moving things on a bit. He played some nice tunes, a few of which I was planning on drawing too which made him chuckle when i berated him for it - also watch out Newbury crew as he will be coming to do a set in the Canal Bar next Bank Holiday weekend. The crowd were loving it by this point and Mc Macular had also arrived to bolster the line up with some rapid fire lyrics. Soon come 2am an Magma alongside myself stepped up for a two hour back to back set, which was duly despatched in a hail of beats and blanket of bass wobble by the pair of us. Shouts to all who came along a represented, especially Wong Snoozle (or MC Sleepy as he may well be known) and Mayla the crazy French chick! Big up the Subfactory guys: Neil Mac and Greenfly for getting that all hooked up for us!

So onto Saturday, I got home at just after 5am on Friday night / Saturday morning and decided to smoke some weed while watching some new South Park episodes, ended up being proper daytime by the time I went to bed, which seemed to work as a perfect catalyst to encourage people to phone me up, and from 11am onwards my mobile was ringing hot, which was punctuating my mornings kippage so I wasn't too pleased. After advising people on numerous issues from Reading Beer Festival hints an tips right through to PC support, I eventually got out of bed at about half one and had to hurry to get ready for my set in the Bricklayers at 2pm. I made it on time with a fresh bag of vinyl, only to find I had to wait for Man-spanking-Utd to finish their ponceball match with Boro'. This meant my set got cut down from an hour to like 20 minutes, Pri was on next though and he just let me play on which I thought was cool of him so I ended up doin like 40 minutes worth of Funk and Soul to a virtually empty pub, the cats out by the bus stop outside were groovin on down though so I made at lest one old lady happy! Like I say Pri jumped on the decks when I bailed, and turned up the pressure a notch with his blend of hard house and psy-trance. Ratzi and Scriv were living up to their eighties Fun House ideology decked out in retina burning dayglo colours with Scriv even rocking the Reebok Pumps (fluorescent ones at that!). I had to jump ship shortly after finishing my set as I had to go sort out a few things for the Canal bar later that evening. Duly sorted I rocked back to the Brickies and was stunned to hear of Craig Marshall's tragic death the night before, which definitely cast a shadow over the remaining events of the day. Sincere condolences to Craig's family and girlfriend for their loss, may he rest in peace.
Despite the awful news the party went on, and I caught the last part of Library Boy's set as well as most of Phil Rumens breakz abuse and the first chunk of Jambo's arrival on the decks (he started with that Skream remix of La Roux and had everyone bopping from the off). Time was relentlessly passing an I had to get my next bag of tunes and set up shop in the Canal Bar, which was pretty busy before I even got started. I chucked on some souled out numbers to begin with including a few cuts off the supremely dope El Michels 'Enter the 37th Chamber' LP I picked up earlier in the week, before making a foray into a spot of old skool hip hop. DJ Stasha bowled in at about 10pm, took the vibe, rolled it up into fattie and lit it up for the rest of us, so before his first tune was over there was a bevy of heads skanking away. Shout outs to the girl dancing in the full on chicken suit, and Meera who was not afraid of showing people how to do a Proper forward roll - I promise I'll wheel one out next time! Stasha kept up the pressure for almost two hours before I jumped back on an finished the do off with some Jungle-ism which pleased some people but seemed to annoy the Hockey crew, who came an asked me to play eighties tunes instead... It's like me going along to one of their Hockey matches and asking them if the can play cricket cos Hockey bores the shit outta me... Always riles me when randoms do that, I simply don't understand it. Anyway so that went down I shut up shop and legged it back to the Bricklayers to catch the last set of the evening, my man SUP, who played a watered down version of his usual hard drum andbass sound but definately kept the vibe alive. I had time for a couple of beers then it was all over and I found myself back home, watching more south park episodes at 5am in the Morning! A Good Day all round except for the shit news we had heard, big up Mikey Deviant, Phill 3 Parts, Ratzi, Scriv, Stasha and all the other people I saw around or hung out with.
Sunday was now upon us and I was knackered so after spending most of the day in bed an checking out the football scores from Saturday (Spurs are gonna get into Europe!!) I dragged my ass down to the Tap for a spot of the drum and bass thing. DJ Skipa fresh from his set in the Brickies on Saturday night popped in a done a tight jump up flavoured blend to get our collective heads nodding before young Jobee stepped up and dropped a heavy set on us. He's still a bit rough round the edges but generally it was a good little mix bar the odd dropped beat here an there but he wasn't afraid to drop tunes in and marks another step in the right direction for the youngster. Next up came Magma ready to smash the place up with his trademark filthy jump up beats which were duly delivered exquisitly. The barmaid kept turning the lights on and off by this point which was sending everyone mental, after sitting around in the dark for about an hour, quite amusing. Then when Magma had done his thing I jumped on with a spot of Jungle (I bought my record box straight from the Canal bar so was armed with some serious tunes as well as the usual Dnb fare) and rolled that for about twenty minutes before upping the bpm with 'On The Run' by Shy FX and getting dirty from there in. All round I was pleased, an it was another big night - props to the dancing crew who were having it all night as well as Skipa for sorting the CDJ's and the MC's Rush n Smoothie for their chitter chatter.
Needless to say I done fuck all on Monday except watch shit on telly and do a massive pile of washing up - true R'n'R!

Last Drum an Bass night in the Tap n Spile!

So this Sunday 31st August was the final 36th Chamber night in the Tap & Spile. We've been doing these nights for over 7 years now and it was a sad day when we found out a couple of weeks ago that the landlord who had worked with us for so long was leaving the pub. We decided to go out with a bang though and booked DJ Friction, DJ Randall and MC Foxy to play us out in style.

The night went off heavy like it was destined too and all the 36th Chamber DJ's pulled out the stops to mash up the dance one last time. Friction killed it with his ridiculously slick mixing and heavy drops before Randall and Foxy dropped some serious tunes to test the sound system. Massive shout out to those guys (and Scheme from Bounce Recordings) for coming down to the party!

We ended with a back to back session from Vapour & myself and although we were both half cut on champagne and weed, we rocked it with a few of the classic tunes that got the Tap jumping over the years, which personally i fucking loved. I hope the people of Newbury (and beyond) have learned something in our time doing the sunday night sessions as well as having a good time to some decent tunes once a week. It's a real shame that its all over now, but we have plans for the next one which will be kicking off a bit later in the year. You will be firmly spammed when the details are confirmed!

Massive thanks to all who have helped us out over the last 7 years; all the people who have given us lifts with the speakers and decks, all the people who've come down and chatted on the mic, all the guys (an a couple of girls) who've sacrificed their sunday evening roast to turn up and spin some records, and most of all the party people who came down week in week out and made the vibe what it was. There's far too many people to list individually but we both know who you are, so big up ya chest!

This is the only picture i got so far. If you got any hit me up and i'll stick them online!

SHY FX @ The Bricklayers - 24th May 2008

Another absoloutly storming night was had by all saturday just gone, Benny Page and Shy FX both devastated the dancefloor of the Bricklayers pulling out all the stops to deliver bass heavy sets crossing through a variety of genre's.
The Thump crew battled against the four elements to keep the music going all night in the Garden area however the barbeque was cancelled this time around due to some technical difficulties with the equipment. Nonetheless they pulled off another good night and everyone was getting down especially round the impromptu pole dancers! (Facebook piccies here).
Anyway back to the main attraction, after waiting all night when 1am came round there was a full room of people just waiting for Shy to do his stuff, and he certainly didn't dissappoint. Starting with some classic reggae vibes and quickly dropping in some filthy dubstep including that heavy new Chase n Status ting which set the place alight, he moved seamlessly from genre to genre before dropping a dubstep relick of Everyday which was the perfect stepping stone to get onto the drum and bass version, and from there he was off blending a variety of big tunes and big dubplates til the crowd went mad.
I think everyone had a wicked night although I did hear a couple of dressed up girls complaining that Shy didn't play any of his hit tunes (Drum and Bass do's aren't really like that ladies), and a few other people just didn't get the dubstep action but we're here to innovate and educate so get to know!
More pictures and video's to follow!

36th Chamber Take Over The Bricklayers - 26th April 2008

The 36th Chamber crew, headed by DJ Vapour and myself the Drunken Monk took over the Bricklayers in Newbury last Saturday night to lay down some serious beats and bass for the good people of Newbury Town.
DJ Randall and Taxman were headlining alongside 36th Chamber residents Jem One, Hades, DJ Vapour & myself, and made for a heavy, sweaty night of pummelling basslines and rock solid beats.
The Thump crew were invited to host the Garden area and were more than capable of providing a breakbeat beatdown for all the smoking and chillout crew when the main room got too ridiculous.
Massive props go out to all the 36th Chamber foot soldiers who helped us to set up the night of the year so far, as well as Randall and Taxman who both smashed it up, also the Bricklayers staff who were rushed off there feet all night and finally all the punters who came down with the party vibe and set it off!!
The next night is on the 24th May featuring Shy Fx and Benny Page with the Breakbeat crew once again rocking the Garden area, so we're all set for another ridiculous evening of sick tunes!!

36th Chamber Recordings 001

36THCH001

A: DJ Vapour - Mr Mingus
B1: DJ Vapour - Make 'Em Bleed
B2: DJ Vapour - Make 'Em Bleed (Mikey Deviant
'Make Em Break' Remix)

Click to buy mp3 / vinyl

The 36th Chamber Recordings is the brain child of DJ Vapour and the Shaolin Drunken Monk who have been promoting nights under the 36th Chamber moniker for several years already. DJ Vapour needs no introduction as he’s one to watch at the moment with forthcoming tracks on 31 Records, Metalheadz, Rufige, CIA Deepcut, SGN:LTD, Dread, Function and Eastside as well as a whole heap of remixes doing the rounds. ‘Mr Mingus’ fires off the first release with a heavy hitting dnb Jazz crossover. These beats have been causing chaos in the scene with several high profile labels missing out on signing the track, and we’re chuffed to have secured it for the debut outing onto vinyl for the 36th chamber.

DJ Vapour - Mr Mingus

‘Make ‘Em Bleed’ takes you back to some classic DJ Vapour roughness. Starting with a chopped and filtered apache break and a subtle string loop the tune soons develops into a reece driven monster. Battered on dub by all the scene's big names, check youtube for a video of Goldie dropping it at a rave in Shanghai to see how this goes on the dancefloor!

DJ Vapour - Make Em Bleed

Finally, never ones to stick to just one genre of music we decided to finish the debut release off, we would enlist the help of fast rising breaks producer: Mikey Deviant, to smash out a dirty breaks remix of Make Em Bleed. The "Make Em Break" remix completely turns DJ Vapours' original on its head into a dirty bass driven beast which is going to be smashing sound systems throughout the summer..
